Mentoring*

Need sound and practical advice with your poetry or fiction?  Whether you’re just starting out as a writer or widely published already, it’s often valuable to get an objective view.

These are just some of the areas where another pair of eyes and ears can be helpful:

  • drafting
  • form and structure
  • themes and ideas
  • plotting
  • dialogue
  • editing
  • assembling a collection (stories or poems)

but we can focus on anything you wish – just one poem or story, an entire collection or a novel in progress.

Mentoring sessions can be conducted in person and/or via email, by arrangement.   To enquire about costs, please email André in the first instance with a summary of what you would like advice on.

André has worked with me on a wide range of poems over the past three months.  His critical suggestions have been meticulous, his feedback via email and over Zoom relaxed and informal.  He has a rare sensitivity to the uniqueness of each poem and his comments reflect that, opening up a dialogue that avoids generalisations and puts the poem centre-stage.  I can highly recommend him to anyone who would like some thoughtful, focused attention on their work.

“I was stalled at a poetic crossroads and asked André if he would consider acting as mentor for a while.  Thanks heavens I did, as  with his tailor-made help my output has moved on significantly and yet is still my own work.  I would be happy to recommend him to anyone else in the same situation “.

André came to run one of our all-day poetry and fiction workshops in Stradbroke, Suffolk. This group has been meeting for nearly 20 years and has an experienced mature membership all of whom are serious about writing. Usually the lecturers are sought out from the University of East Anglia, but André was recommended. He had planned the workshop meticulously and his depth of knowledge of poetry and fiction was self-evident. We wrote a great deal that day and his appraisal was most useful. The day was instructional, and above all, enjoyable because of his easy manner, and he’s been booked to come and give another day of his time to us this year.
